About BBMRI-ERIC

BBMRI-ERIC is the European research infrastructure (RI) for biobanking and biomolecular resources, one of the largest RIs in the health and life sciences. Set up in 2013, BBMRI-ERIC now comprises 28 Member and Observer Countries plus IARC/WHO and around 500 biobanks. Our headquarters are in Graz, Austria.

Our services provided for, and by, the biobanking community (clinicians, researchers, biobankers, industry, patients, public) facilitate responsible access to high-quality samples and biomolecular resources, associated data and medical information. This is made possible through our expertise in technology development, research, ethics, quality, datafication, imaging, AI and biobanking support.

BBMRI-ERIC’s vision is simplified as: “Biobanking for a Healthier World”.

What is biobanking?

Typically, a biobank is a place to store all types of human biological samples, such as blood, tissue, cells or DNA. It also stores data related to the samples as well as other biomolecular resources that can be used in health research.
