Community engagement

We value community engagement as a vital way to highlight the importance of biobanking and biomolecular resources for research. In 2025, the BBMRI-ERIC community engaged over 49,000 participants at local, national and European wide events.

Outreach opportunities are typically webinars, public events, topic-specific symposia, national and regional conferences as well as the annual Europe Biobank Week. Explore some examples below and keep updated about forthcoming events on our page or via the BBMRI-ERIC newsletter.

Europe Biobank Week (EBW)

EBW is the most important event of the year in the global biobanking community and is jointly organised between BBMRI-ERIC and ESBB. It covers the biobanking landscape of human, animal, plant, microbial and environmental samples and data.

The congress typically attracts over 800 participants from over 50 countries who are mainly professionals (biotechnology, pharmaceutical, biobank associations, scientific institutes, hospitals, etc.), patients and government representatives.

Through a high-quality scientific programme of workshops, keynotes, parallel sessions, poster sessions and an exhibition, participants exchange and gather insights, meet industry representatives and discuss the latest findings and topics.

Showcasing innovation

BBMRI-ERIC engages stakeholders to raise the profile of the entire research infrastructure. We hold events to bring policy and decision makers together, to share new strategy and to showcase the cutting-edge innovation happening across the National Nodes.

Uniting communities

The BBMRI-ERIC community is spread across Europe, and beyond, with each National Node enriched by experts with particular skillsets and research interests. We hold workshops and symposia that unites specific parts of the community for more concentrated activities and discussions.

One example, part of the education programme within the BBMRI-ERIC Academy, focused on ethical, legal, and societal implications (ELSI) relevant for biobanks and biomedical research. Explore the story below to see what happened at the 1st ELSI Symposium.
