The Slovak National Node BBMRI.sk (est. June 2025) is a distributed infrastructure designed to unite biobanks across Slovakia. Starting with six founding member organisations, we envision developing a strong operational framework and expand collaboration within the national biobanking network. We aim to ensure interoperability, improve sample and data quality and create opportunities for joint research. In cooperation with BBMRI-ERIC, we plan to adopt international standards, establish strategic partnerships and contribute to projects that will drive innovation in personalised medicine and translational research.

Areas of expertise

Cancer research: We provide high quality, well characterised biospecimens and data that advance oncology research and support progress in diagnostics, targeted therapies and personalised medicine.

Rare diseases: Patients with rare disorders are included in the National Registry with clearly defined data. Biobank resources enabled additional diagnostic assessment and improved patient care.

Liver diseases: We maintain diverse liver disease samples linked with clinical registries, contributing to hepatology research and translating findings into practice.

Achievements

In 2025, BBMRI.sk officially joined BBMRI ERIC, reinforcing Slovakia’s role in the European biobanking landscape and opening new opportunities for international collaboration. This achievement enabled us to engage in strategic discussions shaping biomedical research at the European level.

We initialised cooperation with National Nodes of major research infrastructures — EATRIS.sk, ELIXIR.sk, and SLOVACRIN — and partnered with the Association for the Protection of Patients’ Rights to ensure ethical and patient-focused practices.

At the same time, we developed comprehensive documentation to support upcoming biobank initiatives, establishing a solid foundation for operational standards and future projects that will drive innovation in research and improve healthcare outcomes in Slovakia.
