Preanalytical conditions to prepare human DNA from whole blood

This Swiss Biobanking Platform document supports and guides researchers and biobanks to prepare high-quality DNA for
genomic projects.

Pre-analytical factors—covering sample collection, transport, processing and storage—can significantly affect sample quality and analytical results. Standardising and controlling these steps is therefore essential to ensure reliable, reproducible samples, particularly for genomics and multi-omics research.

This document provides practical guidance for researchers and biobanks on preparing high-quality DNA for genomic projects. It covers sample tracking and identification, as well as recommendations for each pre-analytical step to preserve DNA integrity, prevent contamination and minimise chemical modifications that could affect downstream analyses. The recommendations are aligned with ISO 20186-2 on pre-examination processes for isolated genomic DNA.
