Preanalytical conditions to prepare human RNA from whole blood

This Swiss Biobanking Platform document provides guidance for researchers and biobanks on preparing high-quality RNA for transcriptomic research. It highlights the importance of standardising pre-analytical processes to preserve RNA integrity and ensure reliable, reproducible results.

Recommendations cover RNA quality criteria, sample identification, contamination prevention and handling practices, and are aligned with ISO 20186-1 for isolated cellular RNA. Given RNA’s greater instability compared with DNA, careful handling and storage are particularly critical, as RNA profiles can change rapidly after blood collection.
